Happy New Year! We hope that 2021 is filled with health, happiness, the end to the pandemic, and for your personal and company data to remain secure. We have had a plethora of calls regarding scammers trying to use OMA Comp and other institutions such as banks and the government to try to get you to reveal information, so that they can steal your identity. If you are unsure who you are speaking with or receive an email link you are not expecting, it is best to hang up and call your contact’s phone number. Be aware that scammers try to rope you in by saying that they are your IT company, your marketing company, your bank, anything they can to gain your trust, so that you give them access to your private data. Providing information can cause you millions of dollars in damages, stolen identity, loss of revenue, credit card fraud, social security breach, and more. We urge you to be aware of these scams. Scammers are on the rise, and many people fall for them. Don’t let it be you.

Current Preferred Practices for Backups
We recommend the 3-2-1 backup strategy; at least three or four total verifiable copies of your data, two can be local but on different mediums, and two copies off-site. Back-up monitoring and verification is recommended but a disaster recovery must be in place, because you can still get infected, and data recovery is not guaranteed. Data loss is very real. Talk to us about the best approach for your business. Contact OMA Comp IT support for more information.
What Is Ransomware?
The old backup scheme is not adequate and is no longer the gold standard for businesses. This backup system was based on old fears of fire and theft but this is no longer enough. Now the most common and real risk of data loss is due to ransomware, a very debilitating cyberthreat. Ransomware is malicious software that infects your computer. Your data will be blocked and often your backup destroyed until a hefty payment is received by cybercriminals who usually require compensation in bitcoin to avoid being apprehended. Ransomware can destroy business operations for weeks on end and can take small businesses down altogether. When data is recovered, there is an additional cost and time involved to get everything up and running. If your backup location is stored in the cloud, every time it is restored, the ransomware code can initiate to re-infect your systems. Cloud backups and data recovery plans have to be rethought and managed. Contact OMA Comp to learn about best practices for your business.
