Public Wi-Fi Networks Have Risks

August 4, 2016

OMA Comp WiFi

Consider a “Safety First” Approach

Many people find themselves perusing Wi-Fi on public networks for convenience and cost savings but be aware that these networks are not secure. Even if there is a password, you are allowing an open invitation for others to steal passwords or other personal information. Your data is at risk.

Some TIPS if you must use public networks:  turn off Sharing, use HTTPS whenever possible, enable SSL, and run your traffic through a VPN (virtual private network). Never bank or use credit cards when on a public network. When you are not actively using your internet, turn off your Wi-Fi.

Uh-Oh, Spilled on Your Laptop or Tablet?

June 20, 2016

OMA Comp computer laptop tablet spills

We have all been there. Whether in a rush, a regular klutz, or multi-tasking, spills occur and not surprisingly, we see this often time happening to laptops and tablets. You may not need to “cry over spilt milk”.

What to do if this happens to you.

  • Immediately turn off your laptop
  • Remove the AC adapter and battery
  • Unplug, if applicable, external connections such as: mice, wireless cards and computer keyboards
  • Turn the laptop or tablet upside down so you stop the amount of liquid seeping into your device
  • Use a lint free cleaning cloth to blot excess liquid
