Most of us are on our phones, computers, and other electronic devices more than ever before. Whether for work or private use, our devices have grown to become an extension of ourselves. The data stored within these devices is as important, if not more important, than the devices themselves. Personal photographs, documents, videos, and assorted files constitute most of what we store, yet we often forget to create a backup of these files before it’s too late.

Physical and Digital Mishaps

There are several reasons why a device’s data becomes unusable. Two primary device-based errors and issues include faulty software and malware. The more common instances which deem our data inaccessible are the result of physical mishaps, wherein our devices are stolen, misplaced, or destroyed. In each of these cases, only storing data locally results in the likely permanent loss of data.

How Can I Back Up My Data?

Backing up your data is a fast and safe process and can be done in two primary ways. The first is to create a new physical storage device, such as a USB storage dongle, dedicated to storing a second or third copy of your files. The second, and more automated fashion for backing up your data involves using an online service such as Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, and others. Some of these services can even be set to automatically pull information from a specific device and protected in a second location.

World Back Up Day

March 31st, 2017 is World Backup Day! On this day, people all over the world have pledged to create a back up to protect their data from mishaps. By creating a second copy of your data in a safe, accessible location, you can prevent the frustration associated with technology issues. In a world where 113 phones are stolen per minute and 1 in 10 computers are infected with a virus every minute: you can never be too careful.

Join OMA Comp and take the pledge to participate in this year’s World Backup Day. If you need help in figuring out which backup system is best for you or setting up a computer backup, contact OMA Comp for assistance.
